Assessments
Formative
Definition: This type of assessment is the process of gathering information throughout a lesson, providing feedback, and adjusting instruction to enhance student achievement. This is done during the students learning to understand where the student is at to give the teacher the ability to adjust instruction to fit the students needs and provide them with feedback.
Think-Pair-Share: Students will be given a question and have time to think about their answers. Then, they will pair with another students and discuss their thoughts. Lastly, students will share as a whole group.
Exit Ticket: These are small pieces of paper that students fill out over the lesson given that day and must turn in before they leave or move on to the next lesson.

Summative
Definition: This assessment is given at the end of a learning segment over a large amount of information. In order to assess what the student has learned over that block.
Final Project Students can complete final projects to show what they have learned over a specific topic.

Common Formative Assessments (CFA) CFA's are given at the end of each TEK and go over previous STARR & Benchmark questions. This is an example of a summative assessment because it is given at the end of a learning segment. However, this can also be a formative assessment for the STARR test, depending on how you perceive and plan it.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: This assessment is annual testing throughout the school year to formally assess student learning over a long period of time. There is little to no student feedback given.
Benchmark: At the end of every nine-weeks, students are required to take a benchmark exam that is written by the district and goes over everything they have learned so far.
STAAR Test: This exam assesses students learning over the course of a year within a specific subject. Students need to pass this exam in order to move to the grade above.
Performance
Definition: This assessment is also know as the alternative assessment. Students are required to perform a task instead of the traditional way of answering questions.
Presentations Having students complete group or individual presentations over a topic is a great way to show their understanding of a topic without having them sit down and take a test.
Hands on Manipulation: Students can manipulate tools and create something new in science. For example, students can create their own models of the solar system to show their understanding of relative size, shape, and position.
Diagnostic
Definition: This type of assessment is used as a form of a pretest in order to assess what the students know and any misconception they may have about a topic.
Running Records These ongoing assessments are used to assess a students reading progress and errors. A student reads a book that is on their level while the teacher marks which words a students says incorrectly and how they made the mistake.
Primary Spelling Inventory (PSI): Teachers read a predetermined list of words and the students spell them to the best of their ability. This allows to the teacher to see their knowledge and misconceptions about how words are spelled.
