The Steam locomotive, by John Blenkinsop made traveling around more efficient than riding horses because they were easy to control, didn’t need rest (horses do), and they could pull a lot of weight. The first locomotive, nicknamed “The Tom Thumb” because of its size, pulled a cart of people and raced against a horse. During the race, a part broke off of it’s engine which slowed it down. Though it lost the race with a horse, locomotives became more efficient.
