Feminism is for Everybody bell hooks Pt 2
Race and Gender: how do we move forward?
denial is more real than ignorance: ""all white women in this nation know that whiteness is a privileged category. [...] it means that they are in denial" (55) Denial is an active choice
problem "race as distraction" from gender (for 70s, 80s politics). "a vision of justice, of liberation, is a testament to the movement's strength and power" (58)
sisterhood isn't sisterhood if it's still in service of white supremacy.
"divest white supremacy": the opposite of invest (invest as active and putting in effort) divest as disassociate (unlearning)
domestic violence v patriarchal violence: domestic violence is a soft way of saying violence. Claiming it's private and not as bad (62)
"Patriarchal violence in the home is based on the belief that it is acceptable for a more powerful individual to control others through vairous forms of coercive force" (61). shows the problems with hierarchy, not that it's solely the realm of man.
"We must see both men and women in this society as groups who support the use of violence if we are to eliminate it" (63): levels the playing field, shows that we're all capable of it if we're invested in that idea
child abuse is a product of patriarchal violence (62). "obscures the reality that much patriarchal violence is directed towards children" (62)
"collusion with patriarchal violence" (64) "the right to use force to maintain authority" --women teach children, esp boys, that this is how power works and authority works. the pinching story.
"in a culture of domination, everyone is socialized to see violence as an acceptable form of social control" (64) it's the hierarchies, man.
Masculinity (hi, OJ)
"What is and was needed [...] How can you become what you cannot imagine? And that vision has yet to be made fully clear by feminist thinkers male or female" (70). If we've internalized dominance and subordination on how to make man, but like, what else is there? Self esteem! Self love!
men celebrating "the feminine": men doing consciousness raising and not being ashamed. Men's consciousness-raising. Divesting yourself of sexist thinking, male privilege
"men are socialized by ruling class groups of men to accept domination" (64). "restore to them the sense of power they equate with masculinity" (64)
you want men's attention: Feminist Sex?
shocker: sex has historically been framed for men's pleasure and we don't care about others'
"choosing lesbian" because of unfullfilling relationships with men; you don't have to feel trapped in inequitable relationships. (serve the man at all times)
"heterosexual women were not having satisfying sex in heterosexual marraiges" (80)--does the system/institution remove pleasure?
childless couples! having children seems to increase patriarchal norms in marriages: the issue of capitalistic heteropatriarchy; women bear the child (80-82)
we dispelled the myth that women's worth was only child-bearing. "peer marriage"
"expend more efforts showing alternatives" (74)
"boys had more privilege than girls" but we need to rethink childhood and violence
PATRIARCHY WON'T HEAL YOU (71)
