Migraine
Signs and Symptoms
-
sensitivity to light, noise, and smells
nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, belly pain
-
-
-
-
Migraine aura - visual phemomena such as seeing shapes, bright spots, and/ or flashes of light
-
Treatment
-
Emgality (galcanezumab)
-
-
MOA
Humanized monoclonal antibody that binds to calcitonin gene related peptide ligand, blocking binding to the receptor
-
Excedrin Migraine (acetaminophen, aspirin, caffeine)
MOA
-
Aspirin: inhibits COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes through acetylation decreasing the formation of thromboxane A2 via acetylation of platelet cyclooxygenase. This inhibits platelet aggregation giving an antipyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory effect.

Imitrex (sumatriptan)
-
-
MOA
Sumatriptan causes constriction of the cranial vessels and inhibits pro inflammatory neuropeptide release by agonist activation the 5-hydroxytriptamine 1B or 1D receptor on the intracranial blood vessels and sensory nerves of the trigeminal system.
Pathway
The migraine pathway is not completely known, but there are many theories that identify what is known and what could possibly fill in the blanks.
One theory suggests that migraine is a neurovascular pain syndrome with altered central neuronal processing and involvement of the trigeminovascular system causing painful inflammation in the cranial vessels and the dura mater. These processes and involvement may be potentially triggered by specific triggers such as red wine, excessive afferent stimuli, weather changes, stress, sleep deprivation and many more.
