The Caribbean and North American plates slid past one another in an east-west direction.
While they worked to meet urgent needs, organizations also quickly began developing programs to move Haiti from emergency recovery to long-term rebuilding.
In the immediate wake of the earthquake, President Préval described conditions in his country as "unimaginable," and appealed for international assistance.

Epicentre: 25km west of Port-au-Prince
The USG, with funding from the World Bank, has implemented an advanced imaging system with the help of Rochester Institute of Technology scientists to survey the damage in Haiti and provide images and data to those working on the ground
The USG’s whole-of-government response saved lives and provided critical help for millions of affected Haitians, beginning immediately after the quake. USAID Disaster Assistance Response Teams were on the ground providing logistical and material support. 17 USAID participated in the largest emergency urban food distribution ever, which fed more than 4 million people.
As those immediate needs are met and the humanitarian relief operation continues, the government is struggling to restore the institutions needed for it to function and to address long-term reconstruction and development planning.
Haitian authorities and international relief agencies are delivering food and water to hundreds of makeshift camps in Port-au-Prince. The government provided free transportation to evacuate people from the capital to cities not damaged by the earthquake.
President Préval and Prime Minister Bellerive went to the March 31 international donors'conference with a 10-year recovery action plan.
