Problem: Recycling, Garbage and Food Waste on Campus
Proposed Solutions
-
Using compost bins and converting food waste to fertilizer used in labs or the bioscience greenhouse
Why is it an issue?
-
Bins often get full at large campus events leading people to dispose of what could be recycling in the trash
In 2015, 19.5% of global plastic waste was actually recycled, whereas 25.5% was incinerated (some to do with biohazard protocol) but 55% was discarded of. [2]
-
In Canada in 2019, the amount of plastic that gets recycled is even lower at only 9%. The rest being incinerated or thrown away.
