NERVOUS SYSTEM
PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
Somatic Nervous System- (voluntary control of body movements via skeletal muscles)
Sensory System- (nerves coming from the sensory organs to the CNS)
Motor System- (nerves coming from the CNS to the voluntary muscles)
Autonomic Nervous System- (the part of the nervous system that supplies the internal organs)
Sympathetic division- (“fight or flight”- reacts to stressful events and bodily arousal)
Parasympathetic division- (“rest and digest”- restores the body to normal functioning after arousal, responsible for the day-to-day functioning of the organs and glands)
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
Brain- (core of nervous system)
Midbrain- (region of the developing vertebrate brain that is composed of the tectum and tegmentum)
Hindbrain- (lower part of the brainstem)
Brainstem
Medulla- (breathing, swallowing, & heart rate)
Pons- (sleep, breathing, left- right body coordination, and arousal)
Cerebellum- (involuntary, rapid, fine motor movement)
Forebrain-(anterior part of the brain)
CORTEX
Temporal lobe- (hearing, language, memory)
Primary Auditory cortex- (organized processing)
Wernicke's area- (language/speech comprehension)
Occipital lobe- (vision)
Visual Cortex- (processes visual)
Parietal lobe- (touch, spatial, reasoning)
Primary Somatosensory cortex- (processes sensory info.)
Frontal lobe- (movement, higher mental functions)
Primary Motor cortex- (sends motor commands)
Broca's area- (left frontal lobe- coordination of language/speech production)
LIMBIC SYSTEM
Hypothalamus- (motivational behavior- sleep, hunger)
Amygdala- (fear and memory of fear)
Thalamus- (sensory relay station)
Hippocampus- (formation of long-term memories, memory)
Spinal Chord- (long bundle or neurons carrying messages between body and brain)
