Harper Lee Author's Experiences

The youngest of four children, and was known as the tomboy of the town. She also read a lot as a young girl.
Parents- Her father was a lawyer ( a member of the Alabama state legislature. He also owned part of the local newspaper. As for her mother, she suffered from what was thought to be a mental illness. Some thought she may have had a bipolar disorder.

In highschool, she became very fond of English literature. High School was about the time she really thought about being a writer.
After graduation in 1944, she attended an all-girls college. She specifically attended Huntingdon College (More information about her college).
Lee stood apart from most in her class. She was different because she didn't care about fashion, makeup, hair, or dating. She focused more on studying and writing. Lee was also a part of the literary honor society and the glee club.

Early Writing Career
In 1949, Lee is 23 and heading to New York. She struggled for a several years, working as a ticket agent for Eastern Airlines and for the British Overseas Air Corp (BOAC).
In 1956, the composer and lyricist Michael Martin Brown (her new friend) gave her an impressive amount of money. The money was to support her for a year so she could write. Soon after she quit her job and started writing.

Lee published 2 books in her lifetime -- To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman. Both books were a very big hit. There was thought of Lee writing another book, however, it was never published.
The book Go Set a Watchman was essentially like a sequel, or what was supposed to be To Kill a Mockingbird. However, she rewrote what is now To Kill a Mockingbird and decided that Go Set a Watchman was still a good book for her to publish. So that's what she did
After writing her final book, many asked if she would write another. She stated back that she had said what she wanted, so no she would not write again. And she never did

Harper Lee's Mother

Her name is Frances Cunningham Finch. She was known as a very intelligent girl at a young age. She also loved to play the piano. At age 19 she married A.C Lee who was 30. About that time her bipolar disorder or nervous disorder (manic depression also was thought to be it) took over. Once Harper Lee was born Frances was not really in her life. She was emotionally inaccessible.
Michael Martin Brown
Michael and Lee met through their mutual friend Truman Capote. He is now known as the reason that Harper Lee could write To Kill a Mockingbird
