The Transfer of heat
Heat moves one way
If two objects have different temperatures heat will flow from the warmer object to the colder one
When thermal energy increases so does the temperature
Heat will continue to flow from one object to another until they are equal in temperature
Heat only transfers in one direction
How is heat transferred
Conduction
heat is transferred from object to another without the movement of matter
Convection
Heat is transferred by the movement of currents within a fluid
Convection Current
The thing being heated moves around and once heated is replaced with cold
Example: Radiator heating the air and then cold air coming though and being heated again until all the air in the room is hot
Radiation
Radiation is the transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves
Conductors and Insulators
Conductors
A conductor transfers thermal energy well
Insulators
a material that not conduct heat and electricity
examples are wool, wood, straw, and paper.
gasses in the air are also insulators
