Dream Analysis
Freud believed all dreams were the unconscious fulfilment of wishes that could not be satisfied in the conscious mind.Dreams protect the sleeper while allowing them to express their desires/fantasies in a more acceptable way.The repression of these desires are seen to be a source of mental and behavioural disorders and the therapy aims to interpret what the dreams represent.

DA works on the principle that what the dreamer recalls is actually a symbolic representation of the truth buried in their unconscious mind.
-
Latent content=the true wishes and desires Manifest content=how these desires are symbolised in the dreams we remember
The role of the therapist is to reverse the dreamwork process by turning the manifest content into latent.Freud emphasised that only trained psychoanalysts should do this as the interpretations need to be in context with the clients life experiences.
Free Association is where the client is encouraged to write or verbalise all thoughts that come to mind.FA reveals associations and connection that might go uncovered, this will uncover repressed memories/emotions which will help to identify the truth behind the symbols in the clients dreams,

Between therapy sessions the client may be asked to record their dreams upon waking. The manifest content is often forgotten as we get involved in a new day, so the client is asked to keep a diary of their dreams near the bed and record them while they are in their memory. The manifest content that is recorded in the dream diary is the basis for the discussion during sessions.
