Evolution/Human Family Tree
Natural Selection
Organisms that fit their environment the best will survive and reproduce
Natural selection (aka survival of the fittest) causes evolution
In a family there are differences (variations)
Humans and monkeys share a common ancestor but did not come from eachother
All living things share a common ancester
Natural selection explains how life started?
Human Evolution
Humans are part of the primates group
Humans and apes share a common ancestor
Paleontologists have found fossils of past humans
The oldest human fossil was found in Africa
Modern humans are homo sapiens (wise human)
Humans evolved to have larger brains, taller bodies, use tools, and form communities.
Charles Darwin
Charles Darwin developed the modern theory of evolution
While traveling, he studied many plants and animals
He disagreed with other scientists because he thought evolution takes a very long time to happen
He observed that the animals were different based on their environment
He wrote a book called "The Origin of Species"
The theory of evolution is supported by a lot of evidence such as genetics and heredity
Fossils
Oil, gas, and coal comes from fossils (fossil fuels)
Over millions of years, dead plants were compresses into coal
There are different types of fossils, such as body, trace, mold, and cast
The fossil record is incomplete, because not everything becomes a fossil
Fossils are the remains of things that died long ago and must have quick burial
Fossils tell us about Earth's history and its living things
Plant Adaptations
Plants adapt to get more sunlight and water
Plants have various adaptations such as underground roots
Plants adapt to get nutrients, from soil or animals
Plants adapt to reproduce by using pollen
Plants have evolved by using a number of adaptation
Living things adapt to meet their needs
Flu and Flu Vaccine
Before advanced medicine, the Spanish Flu Killed a lot of people
Vaccines have been developed to help people fight off viruses
The flu can cause symptoms, such as a fever
Viruses have different strains (versions), based on their genes
The Flu is caused by the Influenza viruses
Viruses can mutate and evolve
Extinction
99% of species that lived on earth are gone
Climate change can cause mass extinction such as dinosaurs
Extinction is when the entire species dies out
Evolutionary pressures can also cause the extinction of species.
About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs went extinct
Human activities can cause extinction, which would negatively impact us
