Evolution/Human Family Tree
Natural Selection
Natural selection explains how life started.
In a family, there are differences (variations).
Organisms that fit their environment the best will survive and reproduce.
Natural selection (aka survival of the fittest) causes evolution.
Humans and monkeys share a common ancestor, but did not come from each other.
All living things share a common ancestor.
Human Evolution
Humans are part of the Primate group.
Humans and apes share a common ancestor.
Paleontologists have found fossils of past humans.
The oldest human fossil was found in Africa.
Modern humans are homo sapiens.
Humans evolved to have larger brains, taller bodies, use tools, and form communities.
Charles Darwin
He observed that the animals were different, based on their environment.
While travelling, he studied many plants and animals.
He disagreed with other scientists because he thought evolution takes a very long time to happen.
He wrote a book called "The Origin of Species".
Charles Darwin developed the current theory of evolution.
The Theory of Evolution is supported by a lot of evidence such as genetics and heredity.
Fossils
Fossils are the remains of things that died long ago and must have a quick burial.
There are different types of fossils such as body, trace, mold, and cast.
Oil, gas, and coal comes from fossils (fossil fuels).
Over millions of years, dead plants were compressed into coal.
The fossil record is incomplete because not everything becomes a fossil.
Fossils tell us about Earth's history and it's living things.
Plant Adaptations
Plants adapt to get more sunlight and water.
Plants adapt to get nutrients from either the soil or animals.
Plants have various adaptations, such as underground roots.
Plants adapt to reproduce by using pollen.
Living things adapt to meet their needs.
Plants have evolved by using a number of adaptations.
Flu and Flu Vaccine
Flu can cause symptoms, such as a fever.
Before advanced medicine, the Spanish Flu killed a lot of people.
Flu is caused by the influenza viruses.
Vaccines have been developed to help people fight off viruses.
Viruses can have different strains (versions), based on their genes.
Viruses can mutate and evolve.
Extra Facts
While homo sapiens have survived for about 200,00 years, other species of humans survived for much longer before us.
Homo sapiens are the only species of human left today.
Humans have different skin colors because as they started to disperse and settle away from the equator, some developed darker and lighter skin tones.
Over the course of human evolution, the human brain size has tripled.
