Steps for Writing a Paragraph
Step 1
. Decide on the Topic of your paragraph.
Write down key phrases. What should it be about? What do I know? Where can I go to find answers? What does it mean to me? How can I relate?
Step 3
Demonstrate Your Point
Give info to prove, illustrate, clarify and/or exemplify your point
Ask
What examples can I use?
What info can I give to help clarify my thoughts?
Can I give specific data, experiences or other factual material?
What info does the reader need to see my point?
For Example
Facts, details, reasons, examples
• Information from the readings or class discussions
• Paraphrases or short quotations
• Statistics, polls, percentages, data from research studies
• Personal experience, stories, anecdotes, examples from your life
Step 2
. What is the controlling idea?
Topic sentence should have topic (main subject of the paragraph) and the controlling idea (what you want to say about the topic). eg.
People can avoid plagiarizing by taking certain precautions.
• There are several advantages to online education.
• Effective leadership requires specific qualities that anyone can develop.
Step 4
Give you Paragraph Meaning
After giving enough info to see and understand your point, you need to explain why this information is relevant, meaningful or interesting.
Ask yourself: What does the provided information mean? How does it relate to your overall point, argument or thesis? Why is the information significant/ meaningful?
Step 5
Conclude
Add a concluding sentence. Link one paragraph to the next. Not always necessary but always consider if you should use one.
