Evolution/Human Family Tree :silhouette:
Natural Selection
Natural selection explains how life started
there are differences in a family (variations)
Charles Darwin learned that all living things share a common ancestor
Organisms that fit there environment the best will survive and reproduce
Natural selection is the same thing as survival of the fittest
Natural selection causes evolution
Plant Adaptation (Jr)
Living things need to adapt to meet their needs
Plants adapt to get water by having roots underground
Plants adapt to get sunlight by growing towards the sun
Plants adapt to get food by using soil, animals, or other plant
Plants adapt to reproduce by spreading their seeds (pollen)
Extinction
99% of species on Earth have gone extinct
Mass extinction is when a large number of species dies quickly
Along with climate change evolutionary pressures can lead to extiction.
Extinction is when the whole species dies out
Human activities can cause extinction which can affect us in a negative way
About 65 million years ago dinosaurs went extinct
Fossils
Oil, gas, and coal come from fossils ( fossil fuels)
Over millions of years dead plants were compressed to form coal
There are different types of fossils such as body, trace, mold, and cast
Fossils tell us about Earths history
Not everything becomes a fossil which is why the fossil record is incomplete.
A fossil is the remains of something that died long ago
Charles Darwin
He observed that the animals were different depending on their environment
He disagreed with other scientist, because he thought evolution takes a long time to happen
While traveling he studied many plants and animals
He wrote a book called 'The Origin of Species'
Charles Darwin developed the theory of evolution
The theory of evolution is supported by lots of evidence
Human evolution
Human are part of the primate group
Paleontologist have found fossils of past humans
Humans and apes share a common ancestor
The oldest human fossil was found in Africa
Modern humans are homo sapiens (wise human)
Humans evolved to have larger brains, become taller, use tools, and create societies
Flu and Flu vaccine
The flu is caused by the influenza virus
The flu can cause symptoms, such as a fever
Before the development of medicines, the Spanish flu killed many people
We have developed vaccines to fight off viruses
Viruses have different strands of versions based on their genes.
Viruses can mutate and evolve
Homo Group
Had large brains and they all used tools
First to expand beyond Africa
Discovered by anthropologists Mary and Louis Leakey at Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania in 1955
The homo group consists of species: homo habilis, homo erectus, homo heidelbergensis, homo Rudolfensis, homo floresiensis, homo Neanderthalensis, homo sapien.
Homo Sapiens, the only non extinct species of the group
During climate change 300,000 years ago homo sapiens evolved in Africa
Paranthropus
Also called the robust australopithecine
Lived 2.6 and 0.6 million years ago
Very similar to Australopithecus.
Lived from the Pliocene Period through the Pleistocene Period
An extinct bipedal hominid genus
composed of 3 different hominid species
australopithecus
An extinct hominid
Lived 4 million to 2 million years ago
Discovered in the early 1990s by Tim White
Found in Ethiopia, Africa
Lived from the Late Pliocene Period through the Early Pleistocene Period
Australopithecus
Australopithecus is a genus of hominins that existed in Africa
Has a combination of human-like and ape-like features
Group of extinct primate
Lived 4.4 million to 1.4 million years ago
Considered to be ancient human and one additional species of early human
Ardipithecus
The earliest humans to link with other primates
Evolved in Africa and were first to walk up right
Consists of 4 species: Ardipithecus ramidus, Ardipithecus kadabba, orrorin tugenensis, sahelanthropus tchadensis
Lived approximately 4 million to 2 million years ago
Discovered in the early 1990s by Tim White
Lived from the Late Pliocene Period through the Early Pleistocene Period
