Evolution/Human Family Tree
Natural Selection
Natural Selection explains how life started.
Charles Darwin learned that all living things have a common ancestor.
In a family, there are differences (variations)
Organisms that fit their environment the best will survive and reproduce.
Natural Selection is the same thing as survival of the fittest
human evolution
humans are primates
humans and apes share a common ancestor
paleontologists found fossils of past humans
the oldest human fossil was found in Africa
modern humans are homo sapiens (wise human)
human adapted to have larger brains, use tools, taller, and create communities.
Charles Darwin
Charles Darwin came up with the theory of evolution
On the islands, he observed that the animals were different based on their location
He traveled and learned about many plants and animals to observe their differences
He wrote a book called the origin of species
he disagreed with other scientist, because he believed evolution takes a long time to happen.
the theory of evolution is supported by lots of evidence, including genetics and heredity
Fossils
A fossil is the remains of a once-living thing
Not everything becomes a fossil
A body fossil is part of the living thing
Oil and gas comes from fossils
There are other types of fossils, such as trace, mold, and cast
Over millions of years, plants decomposed into fossil fuels
Plant Adaptation JR
living things need to adapt meet their needs
Plants adapt to get sunlight by growing towards sun
Plants adapt to get water by having roots underground
Plants adapt to get nutrients (food) by using soil, animals, and other plants
Plants adapt to reduce by spreading their seed (pollen)
Flu and flue vaccine
Flu is caused by a virus
The flue virus can cause symptoms, such as fever
Spanish flu killed a number of people
Vaccines are used to fight off viruses
There are different strains (versions) of the virus
Viruses can mutate and evolve
Extinction
About 65 million years ago, all the dinosaurs went extinct
Extinction is when the whole species dies out
99% of all living things have gone extinct
Human activities affect the environment, which can cause the extinction of many species.
Climate change can lead to the extinction of species
Evolutionary pressures can also lead to extinction
