Love in Act 1 of Romeo and Juliet
Courtly love (Romeo for Rosaline)
'underneath the grove of sycamore'
- quiet contemplation
'makes himself an artificial night'
- Sad, locked away
'I love someone. She doesn’t love me.'
'She’ll not be hit / With Cupid’s arrow. '
Platonic love
Sampson and Gregory
Casual mocking one another -
'I strike quickly, being moved. / But thou art not quickly moved to strike.'
Gregory makes fun of Sampson in his being weak:
That shows thee a weak slave, for the weakest goes to the wall.
Benvolio trying to help Romeo get over Rosaline:
At this same ancient feast of Capulet’s / Sups the fair Rosaline whom thou so loves / With all the admired beauties of Verona.
Friends helping romeo:
You are a lover. Borrow Cupid’s wings / And soar with them above a common bound.
True love (Romeo for Juliet)
Oh, she doth teach the torches to burn bright!
So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows
If I profane with my unworthiest hand
Have not saints lips, and holy palmers too?
Familial love
Nurse for Juliet
I nursed her daughter that you talked withall
Capulet for Juliet
She is the hopeful lady of my earth
Care for her, even if he wants the power:
My child is yet a stranger in the world
