Unit 11 Earth's Oceans
What are the Oceans like?
Oceans cover about 71% of Earth's surface, almost three times the area that land covers
.
Ocean water is salt, so you can't drink it.
The deeper the water, the higher the water pressure.
The ocean floor isn't regular
An abyssal plain is a vast, flat area on the deep ocean floor.
The continental slope is the step area where ocean rapidly gets deeper.
The continental shelf is the underwater border of each continent.
How does Ocean water move?
As Waves
Winds from storms transfer a lot of energy to the water, producing very large waves.
As Currents
Currents flow like rivers in the ocean, moving large amounts of water long distances.
As Tides
Tides are affected by the moon, and they rise and fall each day.
What are some ocean ecosystems?
Coral reef
Individual coral polyps are tiny. The reefs they build are massive enough to spot from airplanes and even from orbiting spacecraft.
Inter-tidal zone
The inter-tidal zone provides a habitat for more than underground organisms.
Plankton
Plankton blooms can last for a few days or several weeks. They reproduce in such massive numbers that they form clouds in the water visible from space.
