Evolution/Human Family tree
Natural Selection
In a species there can be different types of organism.
Organisms that fit their environment the best will survive and reproduce (survival of the fittest).
Natural Selection is the same thing as survival of the fittest.
Natural Selection explains how life started.
Natural Selection causes evolution.
Charles Darwin learned that all birds came from the same bird.
Human Evolution
Paleontologists have found fossils of past humans.
The oldest human fossil was found in Africa.
Because of evolution, humans share a common ancestor with apes.
Modern humans are homo sapiens (wise humans).
Humans belong to the group of primates.
Humans adapted to have larger brains for hunting and working together.
Charles Darwin
On the islands he observed that the birds beaks were different depending on their environments.
He disagreed with other scientists because he thought that evolution took a long time to happen.
When he was traveling he studied many plants and animals.
He wrote a book called 'The Origin of Species'.
Charles Darwin developed the modern theory of Evolution.
The Theory of Evolution is supported by lots of evidence including genetics and heredity.
Fossils
There are different types of fossils, such as body, trace, mold, and cast.
Oil, gas, and coal come from fossils (fossil fuels).
Not everything becomes a fossil, so thats why the fossil record is incomplete.
Over millions of years, it took the plants to become compressed to create coal.
Fossils are the remains of things that dies long ago and were buried quickly.
From fossils we can learn about Earths history and its living things.
Plant Adaptations
Plants adapt to get nutrients (food) by using soil, animals, or other plants.
Plant adapt to get light by growing towards the sun
Plants adapt to get water by having roots underground
living things need to adapt to meet their needs
Flu and flu vaccine
Before advanced medicine, the Spanish flu killed a lot of people.
Vaccines have been developed to fight off viruses.
The flu can cause symptoms such as a fever.
Viruses can have different strands and versions.
Flu is caused by the influenza virus.
Viruses can mutate and evolve.
Evolution
99% of species that lived on Earth are gone.
Climate change can cause mass extinction, such as the dinosaurs.
Extinction is when an entire species dies out.
Evolutionary pressure can also cause the extinction of species.
About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs went extinct.
Human activities can cause extinction which will negatively impact us.
Homo Sapiens
Homo Rudolfensis lived in Eastern Africa and lived about 1.9-1.8 million years ago.
Homo heidelbergensis lived in Europe,Asia, and Africa. They lived from about 700,000 to 200,000 years ago.
The Homo Erectus Early African Homo Erectus fossils are the oldest known early humans to have possessed modern human-like body proportions with relatively elongated legs and shorter arms compared to the size of the torso.
The Homo Habilis, this species of humans lived 2.4 to 2.4 million years ago, they lived in Eastern and Southern Africa.
Homo floresiensis, they lived about around100,000 to 50,000 years ago.
The Homo neanderthalensis lived in Europe and Asia, and they lived from about 400,000-40,000 years ago
Homo sapiens evolved in Africa and now live worldwide, they evolved about 300,000 years ago.
