Evolution/Human Family Tree
Natural Selection
natural selection explains how life started
charles darwin learned that all the different birds came from one bird
in a species there can be different types
organisms that fit their environment the best will survive and reproduce
natural selection is the same thing as survival of the fittest
Human Evolution
Humans belong to the group of primates
because of evolution humans share a common ancestor with apes.
palaeontologists have found fossils of past humans
The oldest human fossil was found in africa
Humans adapted to have larger brains for hunting and working toghether
Modern Humans are homo sapiens
Charles Darwin
Charles Darwin developed the modern theory of evolution
when he was travelling he studied many plants and animals
On the islands he observed that the birds beaks were different depending on their environment
He disagreed with other scientists, because he thought that evolution takes a long time to happen
the theory of evolution is supported by lots of evidence, including genetics and heredity
He wrote a book called 'The Origin Of Species'
Fossils
Fossils are the remains of things that died long ago and were buried quickly
Not everything becomes a fossil, so thats the fossil record is incomplete
There are different types of fossils, such as a body, trace, mold, and cast.
Oil, gas, and coal comes from fossils, thats why its called fossil fuels
Over millions of years, it took the plants to become compressed to create coal
From fossils, we can learn about earth's history and its living things
Plant Adaptation
living things need to adapt to meet their needs
plants adapt to get water by having roots underground
Plants adapt to get sunlight by growing towards the sun
Plants adapt to get nutrients (food) by using soil, animals, or other plants
plants adapt to reproduce by spreading their seeds (pollen)
Flu and Flu Vaccine
flu is caused by the influenza viruses
flu can cause symptoms such as a fever
Before advanced medicine, the spanish flu killed a lot of people
vaccines have been developed to fight off viruses
viruses can have different strains (or versions)
Viruses can mutate and evolve
Extinction
about 65 million years ago, dinosours went extinct
Extinction is when the entire species dies out
99% of species that lived on earth are gone
climate change can cause mass extinction, such as the dinosours
evolutionary pressures can also cause the extinction of species
Human activities can cause extinction, which would negatively impact us.
