HUMAN EVOLUTION/HUMAN FAMILY TREE
Natural Selection
Natural Selection explains how life started
Charles Darwin learned that all the different finches (birds) came from one common ancestor
there can be different types of the same animal in a species
Survival of the fittest is the same thing as Natural Selection
Organisms that fit their environment the best, will survive and reproduce.
Natural Selection is a cause of evolution
Human Evolution
Humans belong to the group of primates
The oldest human fossil was found in Africa
Because of evolution, humans share a common ancestor with apes
Modern humans are Homo Sapiens (wise)
Paleontologists have found fossils of past humans
Humans adapted to have larger brains for hunting and working together
Charles Darwin
Charles Darwin developed the modern theory of evolution
When he was traveling, he studied many plants and animals
On the Islands, he observed that the birds beaks were different, depending on their environment.
He disagreed with other scientists, because he thought that evolution takes a long time to happen.
He wrote a book called 'The Origin of Species'
The Theory of Evolution is supported by lots of evidence including genetics and heredity.
Fossils
Oil, gas, and coal come from fossils (fossil fuels).
It took the plants millions of years to become compressed to create coal.
There are different types of fossils, such as body, trace, mold, and cast.
From fossils, we can learn about earths history and the organisms that live on it.
Not everything becomes a fossil, this is why the fossil record is incomplete.
Fossils are the remains of an organism that died long ago and were buried quickly.
Plant Adaptation (Jr)
For plants to get nutrients, they adapt to their environment to get soil, animals or other plants
Some plants adapt to get light by growing towards an area where the sun shines
Plants get water by growing long roots underground
Living things need to adapt to meet their needs
Flu and Flu vaccine
The flu is caused by the influenza viruses
Viruses can have different strains (or versions)
The flu can cause symptoms, such as a fever
Viruses can mutate and evolve
Before advanced medicine, the Spanish flu killed millions of people
vaccines have been developed to fight off viruses
