Special Education and Students with Special Needs in my Classroom (Matt Hoyt)
Identify Struggling Students
Through observation and skills evaluations, I will look for any of the following signs
Easily distracted and trouble focusing
Varied performance from day-to-day or week-to-week
Disorganization
Difficulty reading or pronouncing words
Cannot discriminate between letters, numbers, symbols, or sounds
Poor memory
Acting out in social situations
Difficulty understanding words or concepts
Differentiating Instruction
Once struggling students are identified, I will differentiate instruction to try to meet their needs
Differentiation Ideas for my Classroom
One-to-one attention and conferencing to set goals and build on skills
Giving different test questions
Explicitly using vocabulary to build on English skills
Breaking down instructions to be clearer and easier to understand
Providing more time on assignments
Presenting material with different learning styles
Building organization skills in the student
Working with tutors or specialists to find best methods of teaching the student
Allow for various assessment methods
Parent Involvement
If after differentiation the student is still struggling, I will make sure to strongly involve the parent
I will inform the parents of the specific skills or concepts that their student is struggling in and provide them with ideas on how they can procede with referral and evaluation of their child
Referral
If consented by the parent, I will refer the student for special services which are available on campus (speech and language)
If the parent wants official evaluation of their child then I will set up a meeting for them with the school director to facilitate the process
Response
If the referral and evaluation find that the student is in need of special services, I will continue supporting them with differentiation in my classroom
I will work with school specialists and do research on my own to learn the best ways that I can help the student to grow their skills
I will continue to check in with the student and the student's family to make sure that I am supporting them as best as I can
If the student has more signs develop, I will make sure that the family and any specialists working with the child are aware
