Networks
Types of network
-
LAN
Can be laid out in different typologies- star, bus and ring
-
-
Is usually within a building, or building complex
PAN
-
This means it is small
(for instance, a phone and headphones)
-
Network Topologies
-
Bus Topology
Advantages
- A bus network is easier to create and install, and is therefore cheaper
Disadvantages
- A bus network needs terminators in order to work correctly
- If one node on the bus network breaks, the whole network goes down
How does it work?
In a bus topology, all nodes in the network are connected directly to a central cable, that runs up and down the network, called a backbone. Data is sent up and down the backbone until it reaches it's destination (the correct node is found).
Networks, Positives and Negativess
-
Negatives
-
-
If a server fails, computers on the network may not work

-
Wired networks
Advantages
Up to 100m for ethernet, 2km for fibre optic
-
-
Wireless networks
-
Disadvantages
Less secure than a wired network, as it's signal cannot be contained, meaning no physical connection is used to intercept data
