Occupation-centered, based, focused

Occupation Centered

Occupation is at the "center" of everything we do" / professional specific perspective.

Link everything we do to the occupational core of our profession

"Occupational Lens"/ Professional Reasoning

Occupation-based

employing occupation based methods when we make use of a person's engagement in occupation as the method of our evaluations and interventions

Occupation based evaluation methods include performance and task analysis

Advantages to using occupation-based methods

Political: strong message to others that we have adopted our profession's perspective

Occupation based performance analyses provide us a valid way to evaluate the quality of a person's occupational performance, not just outcome

Task analysis provide valid way to measure person factors, etc impact daily life task performance

Power of occupation as an therapeutic agent

  1. occupation occurs just as it ordinarily unfolds in the person's everyday life. 2. the occupation matches the person's goals. 3 engagement in occupation offers appeal in the form of desirable levels of pleasure, productivity and restoration

Occupation-focused

occupation must be proximal

engaging the person in occupation

immediate focus is on evaluating and or changing a person's quality of occupational performance - "here and now"

discussing occupation, but not engaged in the occupation

observational evaluation methods are occupation based

COPM is occupation focused because it is a interview

Intervention Phase

compensatory model: adaptive occupation (O.F, but not always O.B). It is only O.B when there is an opportunity to practice and learn adaptive occupation. If the proposed intervention also progresses the client developing occupational skill, then the adaptive strategy becomes O.F

Education/teaching: O.F but O.B because there is no active engagement in occupation

Acquisitional Model: occupational skills training - O.B + O.F e.g engaging a child in playing ball in order to become better at playing ball

Restorative models: O.B but not O.F because it is person factors that are in proximal focus
