Special Education Process in your Classroom
IEP (Individualized Education Program)
legal document under US law that is developed for each public school child in the US who needs special edcuation
created through a specific team which includes the child's parents and district personnel
symptoms of struggling student
attention problems
aggressive behavior
social problems
withdrawal
lack of engagement
school would implement intervention by contacting the parents and seeking their approval and providing progress report and working together as a team to achieve skill generalization amongst students (ability to apply acquired skills in various circumstances)
Differentiated Strategies
Physical Therapy (PT) improving a client's ability to perform movement of the human body
Speech Therapy
Psych Support
Occupational therapy (OT) improving a client's ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL)
each school has a referral process (if students unable to follow official school curriculum)
receive education based on their academic levels
receive special accommodations
receive education based on their academic levels
(if still behind) teachers and parents could seek evaluation to the school psychologist to learn about the bigger question
use of dictionary to find words that they do not now
use of visuals to help with learning
coming to class having prepared in advance for the material for the day
assigning partners who could be assisting the student for the day, or week
provide grammar books or assistive materials for additional help and work
