Middle School Mathematics (Grade 6)
Multiplying and Dividing Decimals
Differentiating Instruction
12 Students
Assessment to track student learning
Exit Ticket
Students will be given questions every time after class. This would help them and a teacher to get if they are still making the same mistakes they had made before, or the number of wrong questions are decreasing. The exit ticket questions could be like this:
Kahoot
Kahoot is a digital tool, which has students to solve the questions. Since these students need repetition of solving the math questions to not make any mistakes, this would be a perfect tool for them to practice.
Innovative strategies
Carousel Brainstorm
Finding a mistake is also the process of learning. These 12 students would be grouped and solve the questions as a Carousel Brainstorm way. First, they will solve the questions rotating. After that, they will review other groups' solving and correct the mistakes if there are. If their group made a mistake, they would be able to learn by seeing how other group students figure out that questions. This would help them practice not to make any mistakes.
Multiplying and Dividing Decimals Worksheet
These students have basic understanding in multiplying and dividing decimals, but they frequently make mistakes. To enhance this, they will be asked to solve many worksheets and show how they found the answer. This would help them see where they made mistakes after checking the answers.
These 12 students were able to get the answer correctly from the pre-assessment activities, however, they also made several mistakes. They should focus on not making mistakes.
5 students
These 5 students are outstanding at multiplying and dividing with even the thounsandth's numbers. They have no difficulty with understanding English context and solve the questions with fast speed.
Assessment to track student learning
Scorative
This is a tool that also can be used for the pre-assessment. This shows teachers at which questions students make the most mistake. By having students solve many questions with different decimal numbers, teachers can track with which decimals students are struggling or doing well.
Kahoot
Teachers will change the time limit to solve the questions to these students. It will start with 60 seconds per question and the time will be changed to 50, 40, 30, etc. This would strengthen students' ability to solve the question quickly but correctly. By seeing the results of this, the teacher can track if students are improving or struggling.
Innovative strategies
No calculator for solving the questions
These students will be asked to find the answers without a calculator, but with the paper. This would help them strengthen their mental strength of solving the problem on their own.
Different types of questions
Giving students questions not only with the number but as sentences. This would help them build not only mathematical skills but also English comprehension.
The question can be, for example, 'Leo has $4,522.08 in his bank account. He deposits another $875.50 and then withdraws $300 in cash. How much is left in his account?'
Create a short story
These students will be asked to create a short story with the decimals. The requirement can be 1)They should use at least 10 different decimals 2) They should multiply or divide those decimals within the storyline 3) The story should make sense
Similar to another Innovative Strategies 'Different Types of Questions', this would help students to build math skills as well as reading comprehension skills.
5 students
The rest five students were struggling finding the answer, which gave the teacher ideas if they need additional support.
3 students struggle with Language
Innovative strategies
Questions with the numbers only
Give students questions with only numbers, not as English sentences. This would at least let them understand what they are expected to do.
Questions with images
The instruction will be provided to these students as a small group. The teacher and students will solve the questions with an image together several times, and then they will be asked to solve it as a group, and finally by themselves at the end.
Assessment to track student learning
Kahoot
Same as other high achievement students, these students will be regularly evaluated by the tool 'Kahoot'. However, more time would be given to these students and questions would be just the numbers.
e.g. 2.5 x 0.41=
2 students who have no comprehension of the the topic and need to be tested further for special needs
Assessment to track student learning
Exit Ticket
Make sure to check if they understood correctly what they have learned in today's class. If only one question was given, two questions will be given next time and more and more.
Innovative strategies
Showing video to help their understanding
This video explains how they should solve multiplying and dividing decimals step-by-step. This would help students who have no comprehension of the topic to get the idea of it.

Learning relate to real-life
If the explanation is given with the real-life story, it would help these students understand the comprehension of the unit more easily. However, they would work with an instruction or a specialist together.
