The tendency to interpret and explain information in a way that casts the perceiver in the most favorable manner
Chapter 2 was about self perception and how we usually define ourselves or other people. Self perception is all about determining one's own attitude. What surprised me in this reading was realising how I really define myself from the options given such as moods/feelings, physical appearance, social trait, and more. This chapter helped me realise how I would identify myself and it helped me focus on my traits for example I’m a christian and my social trait is that I’m always a great listener and always willing to help people that’s how I maintained strong relationships with a lot of people. What bothered me from the text was the information given to me about “Researchers suggests that our temperament at age 3 is highly predictive of how we will behave as adults” which I find that very hard to believe given the fact that we are only three and don’t know any better I don’t truly believe that at age 3 we develop a certain type of perspective that we grow into during adulthood, I had many confusion around this part of the story and would like some clarification.
My favorite part of the story was learning about “Reflected appraisal” which means to have a clear image of ourselves from the ways others think they view us. For example, if I had a pimple on my cheek that was very little but still thought it was the first thing people noticed when they looked at me I would start to believe that my pimple was huge and that's the first thing people would notice about me. This topic was interesting because I learned a specific habit then I tend to use whenever I feel insecure about myself and this chapter helped me use specific situations to help me cope with this feeling which is to instead have negativity playing in my head I would currently change those thoughts into a more positive reflection. What I want to study more into this chapter is how biology plays a huge role in communication, as said in the text, “further some studies show that biology accounts for as much as half of communication-related personality traits” I never knew that biology was involved with communication as much I want to look more in detail and be shown how biology plays a various role in how we communicate.
