Movement Of Substances
Diffusion
The net movement of particles from a region where they are of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, down a concentration gradient.

Osmosis
The movement of water molecules from a solution of higher water potential to a solution of lower water potential, through a partially permeable membrane.
The cell surface membrane is a partially permeable membrane. It allows some substances to pass through, but not others.
Such include water, oxygen, glucose and amino acids.
When a partially permeable membrane separates 2 solutions of different water potentials, a water potential gradient is established.

Active Transport
The process in which energy is used to move the particles of a substance against a concentration gradient, that is, from a region where they are of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration.
Since active transport requires energy, active transport occurs only in respiring living cells.
