Test vs Assessment
Test
An instrument or activity used to determine a student's ability to complete certain tasks or demonstrate mastery of a skill or knowledge of content. A form of assessment
Eg: multiple choice test, spelling test
Show the student's ability to memorize facts and figures, instead of a true understanding of those facts and figures (assign grades to students).
Assessment
-
Eg: interviews, observations, test
Done informally in the classroom might show that a student actually understands facts and figures, or a specific process.

Alternative Assessment
WHY?
No single procedure can meet the needs of all learners and situations, so it is important to incorporate a variety of tools to help the students know how they are progressing and to gauge the effectiveness of the methodology and materials used (Frank, 2012).
Importance
Provides meaningful feedback to facilitate students’ learning and improve teachers’ teaching.
The feedback can provide teachers and students information about the students’ current level of performance and the way forward to progress.
Offers immediate evidence in order to accelerate student learning to achieve better outcomes.
According to Black and William (1998, as cited in Fatemeh, 2015 ), alternative assessment is defined as the activities taken by teachers to provide feedback on what students have just performed.
Traditional Assessment
Traditional assessment refers to standardized testing that uses questions with a limited number of answer choices. It includes multiple choice, true or false and some short answer responses.
Portfolios
A purposeful collection of student work that exhibits the student’s efforts, progress, and achievements in one or more areas
A cumulative assessment that represents a student’s work and documents his or her performance
-
Journal
An account of one’s thoughts, feelings, reactions, assessments, ideas, or progress toward goals
