integumentary system
important for physical assessment
hair, nails, and skin
skin function
protects and supports bones, muscles and internal organs

produces and stores some nutrients and gets rid of body waste.
three layers
epidermis, dermis, hypodermis
epidermis
thin outer layer of skin
protects body from bacteria
holds in moisture to prevent dehydration
has melanin (pigment)
albinism
genetic condition that prevents the skin from making its dark pigment of color
when skin is exposed to UV radiation, cells will produce more melanin

dermis
second layer of skin
made up of connective tissue
contains sensory organs, blood vessels, hair follicles, oil and sweat glands, many nerve endings
dermal papillae
small bumps at end of fingertips and feet to form fingerprints
hair and nails
grow from living root in the dermis
we see dead keratinized cells
growth begins at root called follicle
shaft of dead cell pushes up through epidermis where we see hair
nail root produces hard, dead shell called nail plate
