Political Issues
Spain had been a monarchy since 1871, but the power remained in the hands of wealthy oligarchs
There were two main parties; the Conservatives and the Liberals who both wanted power
Elections were rigged by corruption
Because the Spainish army seen itself as protector of the nation, the held a powerful stance in the country for a long time
Politically, military leaders were consevative
Socio-Political Issues
The Catholic Church had a large influence in Spain, as it handled disputes between the state and the church
The upper class had close relations to the church, the people who either had power or were close to this heirarchy
The lower class wanted to limit the power of the church because it had such a great influence
The church had power over education, thus it was apart of people's everyday lives and controlled their knowledge
The older class sided with the church, thus it was hard for change to come
Regionalism
The centralist states resisted the demand for autonomy because they wanted independence
The Catalans and Basque had a different culture and language
Culturally, the people were different as the established their own churches and economy
The industrial areas were in Catalan and Basque territory
Protest broke out because of these reasons
Economic Problems
Agriculture was a main source of employment, however it was inefficient
Workers had to migrate to find work and many of them lived in poverty filled communities
Peasants lived in areas that were not adequate for living and were extremely small, thus they couldn't be productive
Turning for help, going to the church and they demanded for a redistribution of the land
Inflation led to the standard of living for the working class to decrease
Political Divisions
Liberal movement in Spain that wanted to to support education for the middle class but had not been agreed upon by the conservative forces
PSOE had developed in urban areas but was unsuccessful, but the trade union came about, the UGT
A socialist uprising was led by Prieto and a more radical group was led by Callero
the Anarchist were the majority in Spain
The trade union organized a strike that carried out with bombings and killings as they wanted leadership
