Differentiation Strategies
Pre-test is complete during class and 3 groups have been identified. Project objective is to demonstrate understanding of facial proportions. color theory through successful usage of color relationships in a 2D artwork.
the 5 students who appear to have limited knowledge about the topic, of which 3 are struggling with language and are at different reading levels and 2 students who have little to no comprehension of the the topic and need to be tested further for special needs
Students in this group do not know anything about facial proportions. (Eyes are drawn on the forehead, nose is very long, there is no mouth, etc.)
Instructor does a demo using a ruler and a portrait drawing to show them how artists use measurements to create general facial proportions. Students get a copy of the handout and try to draw the basic features in proportion (without hair).
Students who were successful to draw basic proportions correctly continue by adding more detail looking at a line drawing of a portrait. They may start adding hair, eyelashes, lines, more details in the eyes so it resembles the person they are drawing. At this point they are adding details to the proportions so it actually looks like a real person.
When finished, students take a picture and upload their work in the virtual portfolio to share with the class.
Students who are still not able to draw proportions in the right place will watch more step by step video demos. These videos are more visual and there is not much talking so the student can focus more easily on the video. Instructor may watch it with them to help them review the basic concepts.
At this point students may use a handout with the basic measurements and put a paper on top to use it as a guideline to trace over and place the main features.
If they want, they may try to draw it without tracing the guideline.
When finished, students take a picture and upload their work in the virtual portfolio to share with the class.
the 5 students who drew facial proportions correctly and some even added correct shading.
Students in this group understand facial proportions and are able to use it as a guideline to draw different faces.
Students will watch a video demo on how to add expressions and emotions to their portraits.
Students will draw a self-portrait from observation. They will make several expressions and pick one to do the final drawing.
Students may add a background to add a situation for the expression. Background may be abstract or figurative.
When finished, students take a picture and upload their work in the virtual portfolio to share with the class.
the 12 students who have some knowledge about facial proportions but some features are out of place or strangely placed.
Students in this group know some basic measurements for correct facial proportions but have forgotten some of them.
Students will review basic facial proportions by watching a video demo. After watching the demo, they will draw a face with the right proportions using the measuring method.
Students who were able to draw a face with the right proportions will do a self-portrait.
After finishing self-portrait do a peer review and continue by adding value to the portrait.
When finished, students take a picture and upload their work in the virtual portfolio to share with the class.
