Control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH)
What is it?
COSHH is a set or regulations controlling substances that might be hazardous to persons in the workplace
What susbtances are hazardous?
Substances used directly in work activities (glues, paints, cooleants, etc.)
Substancecs generated during work activities (fumes, swarf, etc.)
Naturally occuring substances (blood, sweat, etc.)
When do you need a COSHH assesment?
A COSHH assesment is legally required if you have 5 or more employees, even if you have less than 5 it is sensible to record any actions taken to minimize risk
Control measures
Enclose the process so that the product does not escape.
Extract emissions of the substance near the source.
Change the process to emit less of the substance.
Use a safer form of the product, eg paste rather than powder.
Have as few workers in harm’s way as possible.
Eliminate the use of a harmful product or substance and use a safer one.
Provide personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, coveralls and a respirator. PPE must fit the wearer.

Health and safety at work act (HSWA)
What is it?
The HSWA is a legislation that grants workers and employees certain rights in the workplace that all employers must provide as well as giving the employer certain responsibilities in relation to their employees.
What are its aims?
To secure the health, safety and welfare of persons at work.
To protect persons other than persons at work against risks to health or safety arising out of or in connection with the activities of persons at work.
To control the keeping and use of explosive or highly flammable or otherwise dangerous substances, and generally preventing the unlawful acquisition, possession and use of such substances.
What are the employers responsibilities?
Decide what could harm you in your job and the precautions to stop it. This is would be part of a risk assessment.
In a way you can understand, explain how risks will be controlled and tell you who is responsible for this.
Work with any other employers or contractors sharing the workplace or providing employees (such as agency workers), so that everyone’s health and safety is protected.
Consult and work with you and your health and safety representatives in protecting everyone from harm in the workplace.
Have insurance that covers you in case you get hurt at work or ill through work. Display a hard copy or electronic copy of the current insurance certificate where you can easily read it.
Free of charge, give you the health and safety training you need to do your job.
Report major injuries and fatalities at work.
Free of charge, provide you with any equipment and protective clothing you need, and ensure it is properly looked after.
Provide adequate first-aid facilities.
Provide toilets, washing facilities and drinking water.
What are the employees responsibilities?
Take reasonable care of your own and other people’s health and safety.
Co-operate with your employer on health and safety.
Follow the training you have received when using any work items your employer has given you.
Tell someone (your employer, supervisor, or health and safety representative) if you think the work or inadequate precautions are putting anyone’s health and safety at serious risk.
