The Muscular System A+P CH.7 lecture 2
Strains and tears
caused by overstretching tendons of muscles
mild strain
pulled muscle (slight overstretch)
S&S: no tear. mild pain and stiffness
severe strain
complete muscle tear or complete tendon rupture
S&S: severe pain, swelling, extensive bruising, sometimes paralyzed
acute
trauma
chronic
overuse or disease
moderate strain
S&S: more intense pain, bruising, obvious weakness
diagnosis
medical history, physical exam, imaging, (MRI, X-ray, ultrasound
treatment
depends on severity
Tendinitis/tendinosis
degenerative disease (condition causing tissue or organ to worsen over time leading to breakdown and scarring of tendons
failure of tendon to repair themselves after injury and overuse of untreated acute injuries
S&S: pain, tenderness, and stiffness
Treatment: PRICE, physical therapy, steroids, lasers, ultrasound, shock wave therapy and surgery
Shin splints
common inflammatory injury of lower leg extensor muscles and surrounding tissues
related to running
Treatment: rest, reducing exercise intensity, ice, anti-inflammatory medication, and fixing footwear
