The muscular system A+P CH.7 lecture 1

provides framework of the body and allows for movement

muscles

structure of muscles matches its function

Contractile property of muscle tissue

allows it to become short and thick resulting in nerve impulse and then relax

when impulse is removed, alternative contractions and relaxation causes movement

muscle tissue

bundles of these fibers, each approximately size of hair

types of muscles

skeletal

smooth

cardiac

voluntary, attach to bones of skeletal system, fibers appear striped and allow for eternal movement. Developed through exercise

involuntary. Don't have striped appearance. found within certain organs (blood vessels, airways) allows for internal movement

involuntary. striated appearance. Found only in heart. contraction of muscle causes heartbeat (internal movement)

all muscles have ability to stretch

myopathy

causes:injury genetics, nervous system disorders, medication, cellular abnormalities

symptoms: weakness, cramping, stiffness, and spasms

treatment: Depends on cause

Tendons

fibrous tissue that attach skeletal muscle to bone

ligaments

bone to bone
