Pre-Assessment for Differentiation
Students who have limited knowledge
Differentiation Strategy:
For these students, I will make sure that they are working with students whose skill level is about the same as their own. I will be working a little more with these students as the more skilled players can have a little autonomy. For drills, I will make sure that they are able to have success on their level and not add on the challenge levels too quickly.
FInal Assessments
: During the final assessment I would keep in mind their skill level at the beginning of the unit and where they are now. Participation and a good attitude will be a big part of their sportsmanship grade as it is important to keep a good sense of humor even if your skill is not as advanced as other!
Tracking Progress
: To track the progress of this group through the unit, I would use visual aids to support their learning. This tracking tool can support ELL students and special needs students.
Visual Aid Example
: The poster will have an image of the action they are working on (i.e. forehand hit - racket sport) with the corresponding word next to it. As the students practice and gain more confidence with the movement/terminology, they are able to cover the image (or word) to demonstrate they feel confident with the skill. This approach will allow students to move at their own pace and to help the teacher track progress through the unit/activity.
Students that showcased limited to no knowledge of the topic will build their own visual aid poster by matching the image to the word. This will allow for a gradual introduction to the sport and provide a solid base on the activity.
Benefits for ELL & Special Needs Students
: This type of visual aid process is extra beneficial for those students that are ELL or special needs. Providing multiple ways of learning (visual, verbal, and practice) can support different learning styles and comfort levels.
Students that have some knowledge
Differentiation Strategy:
These students will be considered my co-captains. They will be there to support the captains in case they are absent. When working on skill development this group will be placed together in order to work at a pace that is on their level. While working on concepts and knowledge pieces I will make sure to check their understanding before moving on.
Final Assessments
: During game play, these students will also be assessed on their sportsmanship and ability to play with all levels of players. Their skills will be assessed according to grade level.
Tracking Progress:
To track the progress of this group through the unit, I would break up the major concepts of the activity and separate the students into smaller groups. This will allow for more partner-to-partner support while working with someone at the same level.
Tracking Example
: While working with their partner, they would be using '
Coachs Eye
' to video record their partner performing the skill and then provide constructive feedback to their peer.
By using a video tool, it will allow for students to get a different perspective of their performance, as well as allow them to practice their communication skills of the concept. Throughout the unit, I will be watching the videos to assess their progress in the activity/skill.
Students who answered most of the questions
Differentiation Strategy:
They will be marked as "captains" on the squads. They will take on leadership roles on the teams such as explaining different rules and strategies. They may also be called on to help run drills more effectively. When practicing skills only, these captains will be placed together to work on their skills at a more advanced pace.
Final Assessments
: During the final assessment of game play, I will be assessing these more skilled players on their ability to play with other classmates that are at varying levels of skill. Teamwork, cooperation, and good sportsmanship will be encouraged.
Tracking Progress:
To track the progress of this group through the unit, I would use small game-like activities with specific rules/requirements.
Tracking Example:
Requiring them to use their less dominant hand (i.e. racket sports), playing at a certain distance, adding different boundaries. I will use different skills as milestones to track their progress and mastery.
By creating these added challenges, it will help the more advanced students to continue improving their own pace while at the same time pushing them outside their comfort zone.
