CamachoAshleytEyeEndocrine
Major Glands
Pituitary Gland
-secrete hormones into the bloodstream
Thyroid Gland
-regulates metabolism, growth and development of the human body
Adrenal Gland
-produce hormones that help regulate your metabolism, immune system, blood pressure, and response to stress
Pancreas
-releases liquids into bloodstream and ducts
Testes
-produce sperm and secrete hormones, primarily testosterone
Ovaries
-secrete hormones, protect the eggs, and release eggs for possible fertilization
Pineal Gland
-produces and regulates hormones,including melatonin
Thymus
-helps with the immune system
Parathyroid Gland
-produces parathyroid hormone that raises the blood calcium level
Structures of Eye
Cornea
-controls and focuses entry of light
Aqueous Humor
-nourishes the cornea and the lens
Iris
-controls diameter and size of pupil
Pupil
-lets light into the eye
Lens
-focuses light rays that pass through it to create clear images
Vitreous Humor
-gives the eye its shape
Sclera
-provides protection and form
Optic Nerve
-transfers visual information through electrical impulses to the vision centers of the brain
Retina
-converts light into neural signals
Choroid
-provides nourishment to outer layers of the retina
Ciliary Body
-accommodation, aqueous humor production and resorption, and maintenance of the lens
Functions of Endocrine System
The
endocrine system
is made up of glands that produce and secrete hormones. The hormones regulate the body's metabolism, growth, and sexual development and function.
Hormones
TSH
-stimiulation of thyroid gland( target organ is thyroid)
GH
- stimulates growth, repair, and reproduction(target organ are target cells)
ACTH
-stimulates adrenal cortex to release its hormone(target organ is adrenal cortex)
PRL
-stimulates mammary glands to produce milk(target organ is mammary gland)
FSH
- stimulates follicle cells to produce gametes(target cell is gonads)
LH
-stimulates gonads to produce sex hormone(target organ is gonads)
ADH
-prevents water loss in body(target organ is kidneys)
Oxytocin
-stimulates uterine contractions in uterus and release of milk(target cell is uterus)
TH
-regulate body's metabolism rate(target organ is thyroid gland)
Calcitonin
-produce concentration of calcium ions in the blood(target organ is bone)
PTH
-stimulates osteoclasts to break down the calcium, also triggers kidneys to return calcium ions filtered out of blood back into bloodstream(target organs are kidneys and skeletal system)
Glucocorticoids
-breakdown of proteins and lipids(ragwort organ is anterior lobe)
Mineralocorticoids
-regulate the concentration of mineral ions in the body(target organ is the kidneys)
Norepinephrine
-increase blood flow to brain and muscles(target organ is the nervous system)
Insulin
-lowers blood glucose levels(target organ is the liver)
Glucagon
-raises blood glucose levels(target organ is the liver)
Testosterone
-regulates fertility, muscle mass, and fat distribution(target organ is the testes)
Estrogen
-uterine development, breast development, and growth of pubic hair(target organ is the ovaries)
Progesterone
-support a developing fetus(target organ isn the ovaries)
Melatonin
-regulates the circadian rhythm(target organ s the thalamus)
Thymosin
-help train and develop tulymphocytes
Diseases
Hyperthyroidism
-.Genetic or caused by tumor on thyroid
Hypothyroidism
-the thyroid is under-active and is not producing the sufficient amount of hormone
Graves disease
-Autoimmune disorder that causes hyperthyroidism.
Goiter
-Swelling of the thyroid.
Diabetes Mellitus
-Beta cells do not make insulin leading to blood sugar being too high.
Type II Diabetes
-The body is insulin resistant;therefore, the body produces insulin but the cells do not respond to it.
Diseases Associated with Eye
Color Blindness
-inability to see color due to defective cones
Conjunctivitis
-inflamation of of the conjunctiva usually from bacteria or viral infection
Cataract
-clouding of then lens; causes the world to seem foggy
Giaucoma
-caused by the clogging of aqueous humor
Astigmatism
-unequal curvatures in different parts of the cornea
