The 2008 election of Barack Obama, the first African American US president, brought hope to many Americans, who believed his health and poverty programs would bring change.
Events in 2001 did change the world. On september 11, 2001, terror stuck on US soil and 3000 people died. Four planes were hijacked. Two crashed into the Twin Towers on Manhatten, one hit the Pentagon and the fourth plane missed its target and crashed. 9/11 will always be remembered as the "day that changed the world" and the beginning of the Global War on Terror.
In 1991, there was a short war in the Middle East, called Operation Desert Storm. The aim of this war was to protect Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, which were major suppliers of oil to the USA.
The most significant changes technologically were the internet and the PC. This "information revolution" has changed both our personal lives and professional lives. At the end of the decade, reality TV became a new popular genre.
Gradually throughout the decade the US did better economicallly. Immigration increased, with most new immigrants coming from Latin America.
The 80s will also be remembered as the decade of MTV and the music video, and pop icons like Michael Jackson and Madonna.
In 1989 the Berlin Wall came down and the Cold War came to an end, leaving the USA as the world's only superpower.
The USA was in a cold war with the Sovjet Union and supported anti-communist movements around the globe.
Environmental issues had become important and recression in the steel industry created problems in the industrialized areas of the Midwest. This area previously known as "the steel belt" now became known as "the rust belt" as industries were shut down and the factories literally rusted.
During this decade there was a large influx of immigrants from Asia, in the aftermath of the US defeat in Vietnam.
The Vietnam war was a traumatic experience for the americans. Thousands of young men and women died far from home in a war they didn't understand.
This was the era of the civil rights movements, the space race, the Kennedys, the cold war, the Vietnam war and the hippies.
Also Neil Armstrong became the first man on the moon in 1969.
In 1962 the Cuba missile chrisis, the US was on the brink of water of starting a war with the Sovjet Union. The sovjets had placed nuclear missiles just 90 missiles away from USA and Kennedy demanded to get them removed right away.

Stock market crash on wall street in 1929.
The 1920s brought the automobile, the television, electricity, the motion picture and more industrial growth.
The stock market crash led to the great depression.
Towards the end on the decade WW1 broke out in Europe.
USA had decided not to get involved in the WW2. However when Pearl Harbor got attackted by the Japanese, the USA entered the war on the side of allies.
After WW2, Europe was in ruins, but USA was intact because there had been no fighting at the USAs mainland.
The 1950s
American goods were all over the world and the living situation for most of the americans was really good.
The country had become one of the two superpowers and started the Cold war together with the Sovjet Union, the Cold unfortunately lasted for decades.
Rock and Roll music and teenage idols like Dean James and Elvis Prestley created a new youth culture as well.
