Kindergarten class learning SHAPES
Pre-assessment: Shape Bingo game
the 12 students who have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score, but need to develop higher order thinking skills (These students can almost fully identify the differences between shapes, for ex: oval and circle, rectangle and triangle. They can name some of the shapes in English)
the 5 students who appear to have limited knowledge about the topic, of which 3 are struggling with language and are at different reading levels and 2 students who have little to no comprehension of the the topic and need to be tested further for special needs
students with no comprehension with possible need of testing (students show no interest or no recognition of shapes even after seeing the picture of the shape)
It is common to have students with attention
deficit and behavioral problems,
that could be later attributed to a learning disability. However, children of such early age will not be eligible for testing and diagnosis. Therefore all the teachers can do is accommodate for learning differences. Here are some recommendations/suggestions according to individual differences:
provide a quiet place for learning
allow for more frequent breaks
prepare tools in the classroom (chairs where students can wiggle, heavy lap mat, fidget toys, noice-cancelling earphones, etc)
have a "safe corner" where students can withdraw and use tools to regulate their breathing, to gather thoughts, or to just relax
students struggling with language (they understand the meaning of shape and know the names of all or some of them in their native language)
Play shapes game on iPad (students have to listen to the shapes and identify them on the screen)
the 5 students who answered most, including the most difficult, of the pre-assessment questions correctly (These students can identify the differences between shapes, for ex: oval and circle, rectangle and triangle. They can name all of the shapes in English. they can consistently recognize shapes despite differences in colors and sizes)
Create heterogenous groups of 5 ~ 6 st. The following activities will allow the students to learn through play, while collaborating and learning from each other.Have students rotate into 3 stations:
Station 1: Play Shape Bingo game. Students take turns calling the names of the cards.
Station 2: Shape Activity sheets (lead by the teacher). Teacher will call out a name of a shape and give instruction on which color that shape should be colored.
Station 3: Free play with shapes.
