Who Are The Least of These?
They are hungry
They are thirsty
They are a stranger
One of the biggest issues in Juvenile corrections is that African American juveniles are over-represented, because they are not understood, and often ostracized.
Organizations such as One Day With God take notice of random strangers, and get involved so as to heal families and provide services for them which the family might not have on their own.
Many prisoners or inmates come from vast religious beliefs, such as the Muslim man who believed simply because someone gave him soap.
Many inmates do not expect any sort of kindness, because they understand who they are, so when even the slightest bit is shown, it can be what turns them to Christ.
They need clothes
Many of the children of incarcerated parents grow up in single parent households and cannot afford many things.
Many single parent households struggle to provide food and regular necessities.
Many of the Juveniles who get into trouble come from poverty and engage in petty crimes like shoplifting.
Some inmates need simple care, like a bar of soap! and that's enough to witness about Jesus.
They are sick
Often times those within the corrections system are in a way "sick" and need others to look after them and, help them recover or to rehabilitate them.
The inmate on the front cover of Chapter 12, who was hopeful for a reconsideration but was denied plead that he wasn't in the right state of mind at the age of 14.
They are in prison
This is the demographic we're working with!
Dads incarcerated because of bad choices; are repentant, but do not have the ability to have visits.
Moms that are also incarcerated. Often times has much effect on children.
Juveniles in detainment may not have parents or guardians that are engaged and involved with their life. Programs that train, teach, and encourage the juveniles to live a responsible life are important!
Corrections is not about locking away juveniles because they are "evil" it's about taking the time to retrain them and deter them from a life of crime.
Those within the the Corrections System are all the least of these, because many times we would look down on them because of their situation. Not many people would sympathize with them, nor would they go out of their way to help and show kindness. This is a prime example of what Jesus considered the least of these.
They are the ones so far down, that it's hard to notice.
