In Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses various symbols to advance the deeper themes of the plot. Although this is a common practice in fiction (especially in the older classics), almost everyone and everything in Lord of the Flies is symbolic. The fire, Piggy's specs, and the conch all symbolize a different type of fragility/delicacy within the human race. The fire is the fragility of our hearts, Piggy's specs are the fragility of our minds, and the conch is the fragility of us (and our society) as a whole.
