Hypothalamus: secretes hormones that stimulate and suppress the release of hormones in the pituitary gland.
Pituitary Gland: most important part of the endocrine system because it produces hormones that control many functions of other endocrine glands.
Thyroid Gland: produces thyroid hormones that regulate the body's metabolism. It also plays a big role in bone growth and development of the brain that is part if the nervous system.
Parathyroid Gland: release parathyroid hormones, which regulates calcium levels in the blood and bone metabolism.
Adrenal Gland: Made up of two major parts. The outside part is the adrenal cortex and the inside part is the adrenal medulla. The adrenal cortex produces hormones called corticosteroids which regulate the body's metabolism, the balance of salt and water in the body, the immune system and the sexual function. The adrenal medulla produces hormones called catecholamines that helps the body cope with physical and emotional stress by increasing the blood pressure and heart rate of the body. (adrenaline).
Pineal Gland: Secretes a hormone called melatonin that helps regulate the body's sleeping and waking up schedule.
Reproductive Gland: The main source for of sex hormones in males such as the testes. It secretes hormones like testosterone that affects male sexual development and the growth of facial or pubic hair, and sperm production. In females the ovaries secrete hormones called estrogen and progesterone, and eggs. These hormones control female breast growth, menstruation, and pregnancy.
Pancreas: Has two hormonal functions, exocrine pancreas and endocrine pancreas. The exocrine secretes digestive enzymes and the endocrine secretes insulin and glucagon. They regulate the level of sugar in the blood.
