TOPIC 3: COUNTRY CULTURE ROLE OF LEADERSHIP
GLOBE National Culture Framework
Globe project consists 170 researchers who collect data on 17k managers from 62 countries
9 dimensions; only 2 are independent of the HOFSTEDE model
HOFSTEDE model
Five dimensions (SIMILAR)
1.Assertiveness orientation and gender egalitarianism (similar to masculinity-femininity)
2.Institutional and family collectivism (similar to individualism-collectivism)
3.Future orientation (similar to long-term orientation)
4.Power distance
5.Uncertainty avoidance
Two dimensions (UNIQUE)
Performance orientation
degree to which society encourages societal members to innovate, improve their performance and strive for excellence.
high perf orientation favours training & development, lower perf orientation views family & background as more important
Humane orientation
an indication of the extent to which individuals are expected to be fair, caring, altruistic and generous
a high human orientation = need for belonging and affiliation is emphasised more than material possessions, self-fulfillment, and pleasure.
Less humane oriented societies are more likely to value self-interest and self-gratification
Criticisms
whether all nine dimensions are needed
It is difficult to incorporate all 9 dimensions in any study
The dimensions may not be as distinct as previously thought
Whether all dimensions can be validated
