Hernan Cortes
Born around 1485, Hernán Cortés was a Spanish conquistador who explored Central America, overthrew Moctezuma and his vast Aztec empire and won Mexico for the crown of Spain. Died in Spain in 1547.
Pedro de Alvarado
Was born on 1485, Badajoz, Spain. Spanish conquistador who helped conquer Mexico and Central America for Spain in the 16th century. Died on 1541, in Guadalajara, New Spain.
Lope de Aguirre
Was born sometime between 1510 and 1515 in Guipúzcoa, in northern Spain. He is best known for his final expedition, the search for El Dorado, on which he mutinied against the leader of the expedition. Once he was in control, he went mad with paranoia, ordering the summary executions of many of his companions. Died on 27 de octubre de 1561.
Francisco Pizarro
Was born around 1476 in Trujillo, Spain. Spanish explorer and conquistador Francisco Pizarro helped Vasco Núñez de Balboa discover the Pacific Ocean, and after conquering Peru, founded its capital city, Lima. Died on June 26, 1541, in Lima, Peru.
Ponfilo Narvaez
Was born on 1470 in Vallenda, Spain. Although he was older than most Spaniards who sought their fortunes in the New World, he nevertheless was extremely active in the early conquest period. He was an important figure in the conquests of Jamaica and Cuba in the years between 1509 and 1512. Died on 1528.
Diego de Almagro
Born on 1475. Was a Spanish soldier and conquistador, famous for his role in the defeat of the Inca Empire in Peru and Ecuador and his later participation in a bloody civil war among the victorious conquistadors. Died on July 8, 1538.
Francisco de Orellana
Born on 1490, Trujillo, Extremadura, Castile. Spanish soldier and first European explorer of the Amazon River. After participating with Francisco Pizarro in the conquest of Peru in 1535, Orellana moved to Guayaquil and was named governor of that area in 1538. Died on 1546, Amazon River.
Vasco Nuñez de Balboa
Born in Spain in 1475. Explorer and conquistador Vasco Núñez de Balboa became the first European to see the Pacific Ocean. Died on January 12, 1519, in Acla, near Darién, Panama.
Gonzalo de Sandoval
Spanish conquistador born in 1497 in Medellín and died in December of 1527 in Palos de la Frontera. He/She participated in all major actions of the conquest of Mexico from 1519 to 1526: March to Tenochtitlan, resistance Pánfilo de Narváez, sad night and final siege of the capital. He/She later founded Medellín in 1521 and the port of Coatzacoalcos, or holy spirit in 1522. He/She made several expeditions to Panuco and Colima, accompanied Cortés on his trip to Honduras and directed the settlement of Naco. He/She returned to Spain with Cortés, and died upon arrival at the Peninsula.
Gonzalo Pizarro
Born in 1510 in Trujillo, Cáceres, Spain. He arrived in Peru in 1530 by the hand of his older brother Francisco Pizarro participating in all the most important events of the conquest of Peru. He was one of the Spaniards besieged in the Cuzco in 1536 by Manco Inca. Died on April 10, 1548 in Cuzco, Peru.
