Step 1 "The Wide Mouth"
- Organisation increases its knowledge + info base
- Aim is to collect as many ideas as poss
- Can gather info from research, competitors, existing partners etc
- To move fast at this stage, clear objectives are needed
- Ideas may also be 'recycled' that have already been through the funnel once

- Ideas never enter the funnel completely fully formed

Simple to adopt, which is why many organisations use it
BUT, it doesn't explain what it takes to develop a new product in the market. Also discourages creativity as new ideas are rejected so early before they're tested. Favours safe ideas over creativity
