- - - - commonest type. obsession is of contamination with dirt,germs,body excretions
      - compulsion is washing of hands or whole body repeatedly in a day
    - - person has multiple doubts e.g. door not locked
      - compulsion is checking repeatedly to remove doubt
      - attempt to stop checking leads to mounting anxiety
    - - characterised by repetitive intrusive thoughts, impulses/images which are not associated with compulsive acts
      - content usually sexual/aggressive in nature
      - variant is obsessive rumination which is preoccupation with thoughts. person ruminates in his minds about the pros & cons of thought concerned
    - - rare syndrome
      - characterised by severe obsessive ideas and/or extensive compulsive rituals
      - difficult to diagnose in routine clinical practice
      - useful scale to find out is Y-BOCS ( Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale) and classifies the symptoms and signs of OCD
