Cell Membranes
Facilitated Diffusion
Carrier or channel protein required
No energy required/passive
From high concentration to low concentration
E.g. movement of glucose or amino acids across membranes
Selectively permeable membrane
Co-transport of sodium and glucose and absorption of glucose into the blood.
Sodium/potassium pump actively transports sodium out of the cell and into the blood thereby reducing the concentration of sodium in the cytoplasm.
Sodium moves down its concentration gradient through the carrier protein on the microvilli border bringing glucose with it.
Glucose moves out of the cytoplasm into the blood via facilitated diffusion through a carrier protein.
Active Transport
Energy required in the form of ATP
From low concentration to a high concentration
Carrier protein
Selectively permeable membrane
Osmosis
High to low water potential
No energy required/passive
Partially permeable membrane
Potato tuber practical, beetroot practical, onion plasmolysis practical
Cell membrane structure
Phospholipid bilayer
