Carbohydrates
Complex
Complex carbohydrates consist of many bonds and are therefore hard to break down. This means they are broken down slowly and release energy slowly meaning they energy they produce lasts for a long period. E.g. wholemeal bread, wholemeal rice etc.
Simple
Simple carbohydrates consist of few bonds and can be broken down quickly. This means that their energy is given of quickly and therefore only last for a short period. E.g. potatoes, cakes etc.
Functions
Glucose
Glucose provides energy for the body and makes its way around in the bloodstream. Once it is not needed it is stored in the liver as glycogen after being converted by insulin.
Insulin
Insulin is used in the body to maintain the blood glucose levels in the body. It ensures that the glucose levels do not go too low or too high. It does this by converting the glucose into glycogen which is stored in the liver, when not needed and can convert it back t glucose when needed.
