        Zoe goes back to the witch and asks for help to repair Gevon. The witch tells her that she can't fix his current body but if Zoe keeps the heart (her old pillowcase) and finds new materials, she could make him whole again
        
        On the journey, Zoe meets her real pair (a fox named Sten) and she's conflicted between the pull she feels for the fox and her bond with Gevon. Sten has been struggling with being alone for a very long time and his heart is almost nonexistent. Zoe, upon spending more time with Sten, sacrifices Gevon's heart to save Sten.
        
        Why is Sten sad?
        
        He lost his family in a fire and realized the repercussions of losing your partner for life – the reason why he didn't want to find Zoe. But it also scarred him emotionally and mentally and he can't seem to get out of this rut of thinking what's the point?
        
        in this world if the animals don't meet with their partners they disappear because the heart is unfulfilled (for the humans it's easier to deal with but they're still distraught). Sten plans on disappearing because he doesn't want to form an attachment to his human only to have one of them die.
        
        To find materials, she has to go to the world market and look for a good vessel stuffed animal
      - While on a school field trip, Zoe and Gevon get separated from the others (they were told the wrong location to meet up on the bus) because the others don't really see Gevon as a real creature. As a result, the above occurs.
