Nature of Power
Definition
Power means to have an influence in others. It also means to have control and authority over something or someone.
Theories of Power
Liberalism: Increases the freedom of the individual to be the central problem of politics. It typically believes that the government is needed to protect the people from being harmed by others. Countries are more cooperative.
Realism: World view that countries are selfish and they are only looking out for themselves. If people believe this, that is their real point of view of the world.
Types of Power
Soft Power: This occurs when people try to convince others by the use of words and negotiation. Example: Hollywood, Punta Cana, McDonald's, etc.
Hard Power: It occurs when people try to control others by force not by will. Examples: War, Punishments, Military, etc.
