As mentioned before, influenza is a seasonal flu, and if we don't take an effort to prevent it, odds are that we'll catch the flu. Thus, to build our immunity, we need to take several measures
Vaccinations
- Experts suggest that the best way to avoid the flu is to get vaccinated annually. Getting a vaccination can reduce the risk of illness by 40 to 60 percent, on an average. If you get the the flu after a vaccination, the shot may reduce the severity and duration of your illness. Flu vaccines cause antibodies to develop in the body about two weeks after vaccination. These antibodies provide protection against infection with the viruses that are used to make the vaccine.
Keep hands clean
- Regularly wash your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub. This is because the flu virus can live on hard surfaces for 24 hours. This is especially important before preparing food and eating or after using the bathroom.
Not only should you wash your hands regularly, but you should also make a conscious effort not to touch your nose, mouth, or eyes. The flu virus can travel in the air, but it can also enter your body when your infected hands touch your face.
Avoid large crowds
- Limiting contact with people during flu season can reduce the risk of getting an infection. If you have a weaker immune system, wear a face mask whenever you’re in a public place during flu season. You can also protect yourself by staying away from people who are sick. Keep your distance from anyone who is coughing, sneezing, or has other symptoms of a cold or virus.
Strengthen your immunity
- This is another way to protect yourself, as a strong immune system helps your body fight off infections, and reduces the severity of symptoms.
Sleep at least seven and a half to nine hours per night.
Maintain a regular physical activity routine — at least 30 minutes, three times a week.
Eat a healthy, nutrient-rich diet, as well. Limit sugar, junk foods, and fatty foods. Instead, eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, which are full of vitamins and antioxidants, to promote good health.
Smiling and laughing can help boost your immune system.
